Let me start this by reminding you: if you put alcohol to your lips, you’ve decided not to drive. If you drink and then drive, you’re a complete asshole. Zach was just driving his brother home from a doctor visit, and some complete asshole killed him.

Strong words for strong emotions.

Zachary Zaldivar was killed by a drunk driver who failed to stay in his lane. I didn’t know Zachary well. He was 15 years old when he showed up with his family at my coffee shop a few years ago. One of five brothers- he had a soft quietness about him. Always smiling, but not the center of attention. I served him smoothies many a karaoke night; he befriended my son of the same age. I have a lot more to write about Zach, his family, all the kids I loved on Friday nights, the Hangout on Main, and why I started it. Zachary is one of teens I loved. But I just can’t write anything else. There’s a little hammock inside my heart with Zachary held in it. Too deep within me to be posted on a blog.
